This is the start of the cycle, marked by the shedding of the uterine lining (endometrium). This shedding results in menstrual bleeding, commonly known as a period. This phase typically lasts from 3 to 7 days, with low levels of both estrogen and progesterone.
This phase overlaps with menstruation and continues until ovulation. The pituitary gland releases follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which stimulates the growth of follicles in the ovaries. One dominant follicle will eventually release an egg. The uterine lining begins to thicken again with estrogen levels gradually rising over the course of this phase. This phase can range from approximately 10 to 21 days, with duration differing significantly between individuals.
A surge in luteinizing hormone (LH) triggers ovulation, with a mature egg being released from the ovary. Estrogen will peak just before ovulation. This phase is very short, lasting only 12-48 hours.
The ruptured follicle transforms into the corpus luteum, which produces progesterone.
Progesterone is the dominant in the luteal phase, as it prepares the uterine lining for potential implantation of a fertilized egg. Estrogen levels drop after ovulation before rising again with progesterone. If fertilization doesn't occur, the corpus luteum breaks down. If fertilization doesn’t occur, PMS symptoms can arise, due to the hormones rapidly dropping.
